Kearney Merit Award in Probabilities and Statistics

KEARNEY annually awards an academic merit award to the best student of the Probability and Statistics unit of the Mathematics Department of Técnico.

Target audience and application conditions

Candidates for the Kearney Merit Award in Probability and Statistics are all Técnico students enrolled, for the first time, in the Probability and Statistics curricular unit in the various Técnico degree courses.

Essential requirements

1. Only students who have sat the supplementary examination may be considered for selection purposes.
2. Should there be students who have progressed to the oral examination in Probability and Statistics, the winner will be the student with the highest final mark in the module.
3. In the event of a tie in the final mark, the winner will be determined on the basis of the average of the final marks obtained in the first-year modules by the students tied.
4. If no student progresses to the oral examination: in this case, from amongst the students who sat the supplementary examination, a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 students will be selected whose solutions are considered by the jury to be the closest to the correct solution.
5. Students selected in accordance with point 4 must deliver a 10-minute pitch before the members of the examination board, on a date to be confirmed, with the possible use of digital aids (e.g., video), on an aspect they have learnt in the module that they consider important for an application of their interest; particular value will be placed on considerations regarding how the module can contribute to overcoming the challenges currently faced by a company such as Kearney.
6. In this second scenario, the winner will be the student who receives the highest mark for their pitch, as assessed by the jury, taking into account the quality of the presentation, their understanding of the course content and their ability to establish a link between that content and the chosen application.
Prize

Monetary prize, to be given to Student, amounting to € 1.800 (one thousand and eight hundred euros);
Donation for the improvement of the education quality, amounting to € 1.200 (one thousand two hundred euros).

Jury

The jury must be composed of more than one Técnico member, so that they have a majority of the votes.
