McKinsey Merit Award once again recognises the excellence of Técnico students

Ana Beatriz Andrade, undergraduate student in Aerospace Engineering, was recognised for her outstanding performance in the Computational Mathematics course unit, receiving the McKinsey Merit Award 2024/2025.

The award ceremony took place on 24 September at 4:30 p.m., at the Congress Centre on the Alameda campus. The winner, Ana Beatriz Andrade, who was awarded a prize of 1,600 euros, highlighted “the demanding nature and relevance of the course unit”, emphasising that “this award has been an additional motivation to achieve the best possible results. Receiving it now is also an incentive to continue working and growing in the future.”

Honourable mentions were also awarded to Apolo Gomes and Laura Guerreiro, undergraduate students in Applied Mathematics and Computation, and Miguel Martins, undergraduate student in Materials Engineering. They received certificates of recognition for their performance in Computational Mathematics.

Diogo Amorim Santiago, Junior Engagement Manager at McKinsey, began by congratulating the efforts of the four awarded students, acknowledging, as a former Técnico student himself, the complexity of this course unit. He also reinforced the importance of the partnership between Técnico and the consultancy firm: “Técnico has been an enormous source of talent for McKinsey. All of my teams have been composed almost exclusively of Técnico alumni, which demonstrates the quality of the education provided and its relevance to the market.”

For Pedro Amaral, Vice-President of Técnico for Business Interface, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship, these awards represent a double recognition: “With these prizes we value not only the talent and dedication of the students, but also the work of the teaching staff and the department.” He further stressed that transversal subjects such as Computational Mathematics play a decisive role in students’ education, strengthening their ability to solve problems systematically, and serve as a true “calling card” of Técnico.

In addition to the award granted to the winning student, McKinsey made a donation of 1,070 euros to Técnico’s Department of Mathematics, aimed at improving the quality of teaching in the Computational Mathematics course unit. On behalf of the department, Carlos Caleiro thanked the company for its contribution to the appreciation of foundational engineering subjects, and praised the work of all his colleagues involved in the Computational Mathematics course unit.

McKinsey is part of Técnico’s Partners Network, with the mission of recognising student talent, the relevance of the education provided, and of strengthening the School’s ties to the business community.
