E.Stories: Técnico Alumni Return to Share Entrepreneurial Journeys

On October 30, Instituto Superior Técnico hosted another edition of the E.Stories@Técnico initiative at the Técnico Innovation Center, featuring alumni Nuno Fonseca, from Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Diogo Rato, from Computer Science and Engineering.

The conversation was moderated by Madalena Ferreira, Transformation Enabler at Fidelidade. Both entrepreneurs were encouraged to share the challenges and joys of founding a startup.

Diogo Rato, founder of TestWaves about a year ago, introduced his startup, which is creating a new standard for quality control automation using AI for video games. When asked about his journey to creating a startup, he reminisced about his time as president of GameDev (a Técnico student group) and his participation in Lab2Market 2022, a program that helped him “take the scientific component of the idea and assess if there was a market to explore.”

Nuno Fonseca, on the other hand, founded SoundParticles, an audio software startup that applies graphic computing techniques to sound. The startup has reached Hollywood, being featured in productions such as Game of Thrones, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones. Its client list includes PlayStation and renowned musicians. “Back in 9th grade, I took a career aptitude test, and it gave me the exact same score for music and engineering,” he shared, noting that for someone who loves engineering, music, and cinema, combining these three passions is a dream come true. Addressing challenges, Nuno used an analogy that elicited laughter from the audience: “an entrepreneur tries to make omelets without eggs,” a creative way to illustrate the difficulties faced daily in the entrepreneurial journey.
