Thursday, December 14th, 2023

The event introduced the brunch format and featured seven former students with more than 60 participants.

On October 10th, another “Alumni Talk” took place at the Alameda campus of the Instituto Superior Técnico. The event brought together seven former students from various fields in a lively brunch session that captured the interest of students eager to engage with professionals who had once been in their shoes.

The event opened with remarks from Rogério Colaço, President of the Técnico, who introduced the attending alumni and expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative. The brunch then began, providing each student with the opportunity to sit down with alumni whose academic and professional journeys sparked their interest, fostering diverse discussions in an informal setting.

At Manuel Andrade’s table, an alumnus in Mechanical Engineering and Head of Open Innovation at Galp, the discussion revolved around entrepreneurship and energy transition. Manuel shared his journey at the Technical Institute and mentioned that despite working in his field of study for several years, he feels a stronger connection to the areas of innovation, entrepreneurship, and management. “I consider my greatest professional achievement to be the current project Future Up, which focuses on raising awareness of energy issues among the younger generation,” he emphasized.

The president of Técnico added “in addition to a fire station that Técnico offers the city of Lisbon, this building will be a showcase of projects developed by Técnico students, professors and researchers, which involve talent, innovation, entrepreneurship and value creation”.

The building, which has more than four thousand square metres, houses the largest 24-hour study room in the country with the capacity to accommodate more than 550 students from Universidade de Lisboa, collaborative workspaces, an exhibition area and a multipurpose event space that accommodates more than three hundred people. It is also planned a restaurant area. The project represents an investment of 12 million euros and has received funding from Fidelidade Insurance Company and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), under the Lisbon Regional Operational Programme (Lisboa 2020). The building project, headed by professor João Gomes Ferreira, was entirely developed at Técnico by teams led by architects and professors Teresa Heitor and António Barreiros Ferreira, and professors Francisco Virtuoso and Augusto Gomes.

Técnico students win the Vodafone Merit Award in Mobile Networks and Internet of Things

Tuesday, October 17th, 2023

Jéssica Consciência and Tiago Leite won the award for their project on fight food waste.

The ceremony of the Vodafone Merit Award in Mobile Networks and Internet of Things took place on 22nd June, at Técnico – Alameda Campus. The Antiwaste project, developed by the Técnico students Jéssica Consciência and Tiago Leite (Electrical and Computer Engineering), was the winning project among three projects.

The Antiwaste project aims to fight food waste. For this purpose, a proof of concept was designed that brings together a camera, a screen that would be placed on the fridge door, and an app. When the fridge door is opened, to place or remove a food item, an image is processed and communicated to the app, which displays all the food items available in the fridge and their respective expiry dates on a list. The app will then tell the user when a product is approaching its expiry date and suggests recipes to use almost-expired food, thus contributing to reducing food waste.
